I was invited by Smart and Philippine Information Authority Region 6 (PIA-6) to give a talk to High School student journalists.

This presentation was given in the pre-text of the hostage drama in Manila and the recent achievement of Ms. Philippines Venus Raj at the Ms. Universe pageant.

I presented blogging. Gave them some examples of high school blogs, good practices from Ateneo and Philippine Online Chronicles, and my own example of citizen journalism.

More importantly, I asked them to ask questions that matter to them. Here’s my answer to the run-away winning question. As in Major major!

How can blogging change the image of Filipinos after the hostage drama in Manila? – Ulysses D. Du Jr, 15, M, Sum-ag National High School

Awesome Question!

Lets’ start with ourselves.

Instead of ranting, how can we have a positive, constructive, contributing perspective on the situation? Write about it, make it matter, express what is in your heart and mind, be sincere. If you are able to write a message that is picked up by the global press, then you’ve made an impact. And even if your blog (or facebook note or tumblr story or tweet) is able to positively *influence* 1 or 2 people, then you have made a positive contribution to the Philippines.

Write, blog, express yourself. Be a positive contributor to our country and our world. I thank you! (bow)

Here’s my presentation:

Today, my beloved blog, Technobiography, turns six years old! Parang kailan lang! Six years ago, my life was verrry different. And six years after the birth of Technobiography, I must say: It’s been a great journey!

And there’s so much more to Technobiography, and there’s so much more to life. Abangan!

How do I celebrate this day? Well, allow me to share one of my recent wins: I’m on the latest issue of the MoneySense magazine! Saya!

I’m featured in the article “Make money doing what you love” written by Heinz Bulos. So grab your copy of MoneySense at your suking tindahan ng magasin. It’s the issue with Daphne Oseña-Paez. Quick, the copies are running out fast! My mom’s buying every copy she could get hold of! LOL!

Below, after the images, you’ll find the full transcript of our interview with Heinz of MoneySense which he used in writing the article.

Are you doing what you love?
Ka Edong interviewed by Heinz Bulos
Jan 28, 2010

Heinz Bulos of MoneySense: What do you love to do that has also become a source of income for you?

Ka Edong: Two things: blogging (my hobby) and thinking/creating technology-based services that help Filipinos

MoneySense: Is it your main or primary source of income or just a supplemental source?

Ka Edong: Creating technology-based services is my primary source of income. I’m an Assistant Product Manager at Smart Communications.
Blogging is a supplemental source. I blog at www.technobiography.com about my technology life , www.edwinsoriano.com about personal development and at www.eofw.net for OFWs online.

MoneySense: How do you earn from it, i.e. what’s the business model?

Ka Edong: I earn through blogging mainly through Google Adsense. When visitors to my blog click on advertisements, I get paid. I also have link advertisers — people who are willing to pay me when I display a link to their site from my site.

MoneySense: How long have you been doing it?

Ka Edong: Been blogging since 2004

MoneySense: What is it about your work that makes you enjoy it?

Ka Edong: I enjoy blogging because it’s my form of expression. I get a high as well when I know that there are many readers who benefit from my articles.
I enjoy my work at Smart because I’m able to implement the many ideas I have or at least influence the products that serve the Filipinos.

MoneySense: What skills, talents, and strengths do you have that makes your work a perfect match?

Ka Edong: I have a technical background (Electrical Engineer from UP Diliman), I am firmly attuned with the man on the street, and I’m able to communicate well between management, developers and end-users. This puts me in a very good position to create products (in Smart) or articles (in blogging) that serve Filipinos.

MoneySense: How did you come to the realization that it’s something you really love to do? When did you know this?

Ka Edong: I’ve been a telecommunications analyst for a very long time. In fact, when I started blogging in 2005, I wrote a whole lot about my observations of the telecoms industry. I was an outside observer of the telecoms industry, a customer who had many ideas about how to improve the telecoms, especially in relation to mobile commerce.

MoneySense: Did you plunge into it immediately or did it take you a long time carefully planning for it?

Ka Edong: Blogging is a long-time hobby. Eventually, I will be taking the path of the “New Rich” as described in the 4-hour workweek by Tim Ferris. For now, I enjoy the best of both worlds of full-time employment which I enjoy a lot and supplemental income of blogging which I enjoy a lot as well. As I like to say: Awesome work, Awesome play, Awesome worth and Awesome pay!

MoneySense: Did you study the market and made a business plan first or did you just go ahead for the fun of it?

Ka Edong: For the fun of it.

MoneySense: Were there people doing the job you love that you wanted to emulate? How did you learn from them?

Ka Edong: Anton Diaz is a friend and role model for me. He built up his blog www.ourawesomeplanet.com , he learned fast and did very well — enough to resign from his corporate job and spend more time with his family. I’ve taken Anton’s course, Maven Secrets, and continue to work on my blog to increase the value that I create through my blog. Anton and I share a similar passion as well for teaching/coaching. I look forward to doing more of that in the future. And of course, we’re proud Filipinos! Saya!

MoneySense: What small steps did you take to get started?

Ka Edong: I used www.blogspot.com ! . And I just wrote for self-expression without worrying much about what other people would think about my blog. Many newbie bloggers get analysis paralysis when they dwell too much on the look of their blog. Basta, sulat ka muna ng sulat, and then improve along the way.

MoneySense: What made you realize you’re on the right track?

Ka Edong: When I hit my first $100 per month earnings from my blog, I was amazed! Wow, this is something I could grow! What was even more amazing was the time that I didn’t blog for more than a month. And the money still was coming in. That’s when I realized that there are ways to earn from blogging without necessarily sweating it out too much (meron pa ring sweat, siyempre).

MoneySense: Do you believe in the saying “Do what you love, and the money will follow? Is pursuing your passion enough to become successful?

Ka Edong: I would take this advice with a grain of salt. There’s a balance that allows you enough risk to go out of your comfort zone, without putting your life (and the people you love) at a compromising situation.

MoneySense: What advice can you give people who are stuck in jobs they hate or they have accepted as their fate?

Ka Edong: First: Find the good in your current situation. Gratitude has a way of increasing our blessings.

To share a story: I had a conversation with a utility lady at our building.
I asked: “Kumusta buhay, ano balita?”
She replied with a long face: “Wala sir, walang magandang balita.”
I asked: “Bakit walang magandang balita? Buhay ka pa ba?”
She replied: “Opo.”
I asked: “May trabaho ka ba?”
She replied (now with a hint of a smile): “Opo.”
I said: “O, naka-dalawa na tayong magandang balita! Ano pa’ng iba?”

Second: Slowly but surely, develop yourself. Learn something new everyday. Expand yourself beyond your comfort zone. Do something that you always have wanted to do! And joy will increase.

(end of interview)

Gratitude for 6 years of Technobiography and a great life ahead!

I thank all friends and readers of Technobiography as well as blogger friends and online friends we meet along the way. We celebrate what we have achieved, and we look forward to so much more we could achieve!

Here’s to many more years of fun and fulfillment in doing what we love!

I’ve been updating my wordpress blogs the past weeks.

On www.edwinsoriano.com, I was trying to update one of my widgets. But when I click “save” on the widget, I kept getting this error:

Are you sure you want to do this?

Please try again.

After many attempts and getting the same result, I did a Google search for “WordPress error are you sure you want to do this“. Most of the results had to do with WordPress MU which I wasn’t using.

I was able to fix the error on my own. I found that if I deactivate one of my plugins, I no longer get the error.

Here’s how I did it:

In WordPress, Go to Plugins section

Deactivate ALL plugins

Test if updating your widget now works.

3.a. If widget update works, it means one of your plugins is causing the error. –> Proceed to step 4.

3.b. If widget update still doesn’t work, it means the error is *not* caused by a plugin. –> I have no other solution so far.

RE-Activate your plugins one by one, each time checking if widget updating still works.

When you find a plugin that, when reactivated, causes the widget updating to have an error — REJOICE! You’ve found the erring plugin.

5.a. Update this plugin or revert to older versions of the plugin. See if that works.

OR

5.b. Deactivate this plugin.

Repeat step 4 until all other plugins are reactivated.

Now I’m a happy puppy because I found a solution for the error in www.edwinsoriano.com . Hope the solution above can help other bloggers too.

One post-script, though. I’m encountering the same problem in www.technobiography.com . And the above solution isn’t working — I get the scenario 3.b. where the plugins do not cause the error.I’ll try in a while: reverting to basic theme. Let’s see if that works.

Worked like a charm for me. For both www.edwinsoriano.com and www.technobiography.com .

ka edong

Choose Mobile Technology as a niche. Could be a very successful niche.

De-clutter the sidebar. Most people look for content and not the sidebar.

Thanks for your inputs, Anton!

Here’s a recent email from Anton regarding the Maven Secrets program:

Ateneo celebrated its 150th anniversary last Sunday, June 14. There was a whole-day program involving a motorcade passing through the Ateneo campuses in Manila, with programs in key campuses along the itinerary. Visit: http://150.ateneo.edu

Throughout the day, Ateneo had ten videographers covering the event through live mobile video streaming enabled by the Smart network using an online video service called QIK (www.qik.com) .

Ateneo Sesqui mobile videos

The interesting thing is that in the Ateneo Sesqui group on qik, videos from different handsets were being streamed in sequence, like a relay race. Thus, online visitors got to watch the celebration LIVE on their computers from the different viewpoints of each videographer.

Results:

Videos: 204

Views: 4142 (as of June 17 afternoon)

Total time filmed: 05:43:51

Live Streaming Videos via Mobile: A Qik Guide

Our friends at Ateneo, Ton Dolor and Mimi Agbay, led the team of videographers. They’re now experts in using qik and join the ranks of Ashton Kutcher who happens to be a big qik user.

Ton put together a guide so other groups can do similar video streaming for their event. Here goes from Ton…

Setting-up qik: A Guide for the Videographers

Below is a guide I made for the videographers.
You can freely share it with others and add to it so that others won’t have to write everything from scratch.

Step 1. Configure N82

Activate newly installed SMART SIM:
Profiles > Options > Activate

Set the date (otherwise you won’t be able to install Qik)
Clock > Options > Settings

Activate MMS/GPRS/3G service
text SET N82 to 211.
You will receive a confirmation message. Follow the instructions.

Avail of the SMART Promo

text INET DAY to 211 (P100 for 12 hours)
text INET DAY to 211 (P50 for 5 hours)

Step 2. Sign up for a Qik account

http://qik.com/sign_up

Step 3. Install Qik

Download Qik installer from http://qik.com/account/download_qik
Attach USB cable to phone and copy Qik installer to phone

Filename: qik_s60_3rd__0_09_56

Go to Tools > File Mgr > select qik_s60_3rd__0_09_56
Select Options > Open
Install Qik? > Click Yes > Click Continue
Select Phone Memory

Once Qik is installed, fill up configuration menu as follows:

Login as: Existing user
Enter username: enter username
Enter password: enter your password

Click sign in
Select SmartInternet
Click stream

Step 4. Create a group within Qik to stream simultaneous feeds from several users.

Note: User should enable automatic sharing to be able to share live feed to the group:

Login to Qik
Click Edit Profile > Groups
Under Group Name select the name of the group
Click Automatically share to this Group

What worked:

1. Phone. N82 is a great phone for this type of coverage. Handled properly, some of the clips looked as if they were taken by a hand-held videocam. The audio is audible and quite clear.

2. Video length. Clips that were over a minute in length were generally more interesting.

3. Reporting. I found it more interesting when the videographer reported what was actually happening during the event. It also helped that were a lot of videographers which gave the event a very wide coverage, with different points of view and different styles of taking videos. The no holds-barred (no script) reporting/coverage also worked well. It was very natural, as if you were actually participating first-hand in the ongoing event.

4. Cost. The cost of streaming the event is almost free. Internet access is a bargain at P100 for 12 hours. The phones were provided for free thanks to SMART. The cost of video storage is likewise free c/o Qik.

Some suggestions:

1. Subject. Before hitting the stream button, focus on a nice subject first (not on the floor or ceiling). The first image captured by the camera becomes the icon/tile on the Qik site.

2. Profiles. Reporters should put titles on their video streams so that clips will not be classified as Untitled in the website.
Reporters should also update their profiles to reflect the country they are in otherwise their location on the site defaults to United States. It would have been nice if the videographers uploaded their pictures as well.

3. Battery life. Batteries ran out towards the latter part of the coverage so backup batteries and portable charges are needed in a day-long coverage.

4. Proper handling of the camera. Some of the clips made me dizzy. The image pixelates when the camera moves too fast.

5. Embed code. The embed code at the Qik website had limited functionality since it only showed what was going on live. It is better to have a link (or redirect) to the actual Qik page.

Thanks to Ton for permission to publish his guide in full.

So folks, what are you waiting for? Start qik-ing!

Sounds like “Technology Transfer” doesn’t it? Well it is.

Yesterday, I migrated hosting of Technobiography. I transfered Technobiography.com to dreamhost.com .

Here’s an walk-through of how I migrated from http://technobiography.edongskey.com in ploghost to http://www.technobiography.com in dreamhost. For my use (or other people’s use) as a codigo in the future.

How to transfer a WordPress Blog from one webhost to another

lipatbahay - Technobiography transfer

Pray.

Prepare the new webhost – Install wordpress at the new webhost. I learned that dreamhost has a one-click wordpress installation. I would have been resistant using this especially when I know how to install from scratch. But it’s been working well and I recommend the one-click install. No sweat.

Backup entire blog – There are many ways to backup your wordpres blog. You can try some of the popular ones: WP-DB-Backup or do a Google Search of “WordPress Backup“. I also copied my entire wordpress folder from my old webhost unto my hard disk using Filezilla FTP client.

Export old blog – WordPress has a built-in function in wp-admin under Tools > Export. This action will create a WordPress eXtended RSS or WXR file which you need to save in your hard drive. The file will contain your posts, pages, comments, custom fields, categories, and tags. I’m pleased to find that this process I’m describing also migrates all article photos too.

Import in new blog host – Login to your new blog in your new webhost. Use the import function under Tools > Import. This action will ask for your WXR file (the one you saved in step 3). The import may take time especially if you’re importing a big WXR file. My 5Mb WXR file took around 5 minutes to upload.
When done, you’ll be presented with a list of all the articles (and comments) successfully imported. Viola!

Re-build settings of your new blog

Theme: using FTP, copy your old theme unto new webhost in the default location (wp-content/themes);
Using new wp-admin, activate your theme

Plugins: using FTP, copy your old plugins unto new server, same location;
Using new wp-admin, activate your plugins.

Settings: using wp-admin, copy the same settings from old blog to new blog.
Note especially the permalinks format .
Also note the comments settings — you may want to change the default setting of new wp installs that visitors need to have 2 approved comments before they get published.
Tip: open old wp-admin and new wp-admin windows side-by-side so you can easily copy settings

Widgets: using wp-admin copy widgets from old to new blog. You may need to manually copy-paste content of your old widgets into your new widgets.

Point domain to new blog location. Go to your domain registrar to change domain settings. I manage my domains through godaddy.com . In godaddy.com, go to “manage domains” and change your nameserver settings so that it points to your new webhost’s nameservers.

Re-direct traffic from old blog to new blog. (see note below if you’re using the same domain name). This is important. You want your old blog pages to redirect to your new blog. I used the Redirection plugin by John Godley.
Install the Redirection plugin in your OLD blog.
Redirect your blog posts, blog pages, monthly-archive pages and index page to the equivalent page in the new blog host location.

Now I know there is a shortcut in doing this with wildcards. After several attempts, I wasn’t able to figure it out. So I manually made 301 redirections for each blogpost. I know, it was tedious, but it works.

Note: I took this step because I changed domain names. This may not be applicable if you’re maintaing your domain name but just transferring web hosts. If so, then step #10 should be enough.

Clean-up. You may want to clear your old webhost of your old files. The “uploads” folder can go out first as this takes up a lot of space. Warning: If you used the re-direct plugin in step 11, you need to maintain wordpress for the re-directs to work. Alternative is to use a .htaccess redirect (which I didn’t do because I didn’t figure out how to do it ) .

Pray. Whether things went berserk or whether all went smooth sailing for you (which almost never happens), say a prayer of thanks that you are still alive and that your beloved blog is now in a new place where it will be safe and sound just like your mind is.

I know this codigo will come in handy for me in the future. I also hope other folks will benefit from this codigo.

I gave a talk at iBlog5 yesterday about Mobile Blogging 101. It was nice. Short and sweet. Simple. Spontaneous. I liked the interaction we got with the audience.

Update: See online video here c/o Janette: Mobile Blogging by Edwin 1/2 (2/2)

And, as usual, there were a few inputs that I had planned to give, but was not able to say it right there. I also got some good feedback from the audience and I’d like to clarify their questions and share it to readers. Good thing I can still put out these inputs through my blog .

For my iBlog5 postcript, I’d like to share my beginnings as a mobile blogger, my story about mobile blogging in the 2004 elections, my support for blogging (and mobile blogging) for the 2010 elections as well as a few thank you notes.

My first mobile blog post

My First Mobile Blogpost: Birth of Technobiography

When I was preparing for my talk at iBlog5, I looked into my blog archives and was pleasantly, um, pleased to find out that …

My first Technobiography blogpost in April 11, 2004 was actually written using Brosia, my cellphone circa 2003-2007.

I realized that when I started out blogging, I was already using an element of mobile blogging – using my cellphone to capture “urgent” thoughts. Urgent because I couldn’t sleep with this “Technobiography manifesto” running in my mind.

Mobile Blogging: Ganito ako nuon, ganito na tayo ngayon

At iBlog5 yesterday, it was an “old friend” reunion of sorts getting re-acquainted face-to-face with JM Tuazon.

You see, JM and I first met as volunteers of NAMFREL in the 2004 elections. JM and I had maintained an online interaction through the years via email or through each other’s blogs.

Wow, it’s been 5 years since our NAMFREL days in 2004.
And now we’re 365+1 days before the next election in 2010.

Which brings me to two thoughts:

The beginnings of mobile blogging for elections in 2004

and mobile blogging for the elections in 2010.

Ganito ako nuon, ganito tayo ngayon

Ganito ako nuon
I remember how in 2004, I was already mobile blogging even with the limited tools available. I didn’t have a wifi laptop or netbook back then. So I created ways to blog from my cellphone with the tools that I DID have.

At that time, I had a GPRS connection on Brosia, my cellphone. I didn’t want to be blogging directly from my phone to Blogspot’s website. Because it was still expensive back then (we were charged on a per kB basis back then). Not only was it expensive for me, but it was also slow and clanky for my purposes.

The solution I create was a combination of text messaging, an SMS-to-email service and Blogspot’s e-mail-to-blog feature to mobile blogging the elections on Technobiography.

The results of that solution, you will find at these blogposts in May 2004. (They include post-production updates done via desktop). I even had an election photo blog! Early bloomer pala ako

Ganito tayo ngayon

Yesterday, I presented a whole lot more highly developed tools for mobile blogging. (See my presentation , with links).

Towards the end, I made a call to action: “Create Value!”.

I also wanted to tie that in with the other talks that came in the afternoon, specifically Blogging for the elections.

I see the criticality of delivering timely blog posts, whether before, during or after the Elections.

“Timely” will mean different things for different situations and for different story-telling styles.

But when “timely” means “immediate” or “now”, mobile blogging will be a critical tool for bloggers to put out their story, even if (or *because*) the story is in its most plain, most pure, although plausibly incomplete.

I’d like to send this message to fellow-bloggers:

by blogging about the elections, we can contribute to the awareness, the transparency, and the general movement of citizen participation in the elections.

Thus, I enjoin fellow-bloggers to participate in blogging for the elections. You can do it in your own way. And you can also do it as part of a group. Janette has created the Blogging for Elections site. Feel free to approach Janette if you want to contribute.

My action item: As for me, I will continue to provide mobile blogging demos that will help bloggers equip themselves with tools for the time they will need, either for blogging the elections or for blogging what else they are passionate about.

“Wrap-up”

I’d like to thank the organizers of iBlog5. It was a good experience.

I’m glad to hear from those who gave feedback that I had raised their awareness about Mobile Blogging. I take your feedback well and will be creating more demos to show you more clearly the mobile blogging tools available out there.

I learned a lot from the other iBlog5 speakers too. I’ll catch up on videos for the talks I missed.

I’d like to highlight the very well-though-out talk of Anton Diaz on taking Blogging to the next level. Excellent insights!

Salamat po, doktor!

I first heard about HelloTxt from my friend Anton when I read his e-book at Maven Secrets . I’ve been playing around with HelloTxt these past few days and it’s been quite nifty.

I tried it out, and here’s sharing my experience so far.

From the HelloTxt website:

HelloTxt lets you update your status and read your friends’ status across all main
microblogging and social networks all at once…

You can update your status on the website, or using email or even from your mobile phone. You can also embed photos and video right into your status updates.

Ka Edong’s HelloTxt Life experience (all three days of it)

Easy to register. I got my account running within a minute.

Easy to add your social networks. HelloTxt made it easy for me to connect to my social networks and microblogging sites (Twitter, Plurk, Facebook, Friendster etc.).

There’s a “social services” dashboard which lists all the networks that HelloTxt connects to. It’s as easy as choosing your social network and entering your username and password. (Some require extra steps like activating an app on Facebook).

After adding your social network, it’s listed conveniently on the upper right side of your HelloTxt lifestream.

When you visit your lifestream, Just enter your status on the status box, click “Update status” and all your listed social networks are updated with your new status.

You can even post photos or videos to enhance your status.

You can update via SMS or email. There’s even a service that let’s you update status through a phone call!

HelloTxt mobile version: m.hellotxt.com

These guys are up to something hot!

I haven’t been able to activate my SMS update, though. I’ve tried activating twice, but haven’t received the activation email.

Try out HelloTxt especially if you have multiple social networks or microblogs that you wish to update in one fell sweep. Check out my HelloTxt lifestream.
