M-Commerce ideas become reality

by Ka Edong on March 7, 2006

I had a discussion with a Filipina consultant based in Washington D.C. and my colleague who’s doing a case on m-commerce for microfinance. Our discussion revolved around developments in m-commerce in the Philippines and its replicability in other countries such as Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

As I’ve said before, when it comes to mobile commerce, the world is watching the Philippines!

There were a couple of developments which I find very interesting.

First is about G-Cash for payroll. In November 2004, I wrote an article entitled “G-Cash kicks butt … but… ”.

In that article, I challenged Globe this way:

If Globe has so much faith in G-Cash, I say to Globe:
“Then you should pay employee salaries using G-Cash.”

This is not a hollow proposition. I make this proposition for two reasons.

* First, I see it as a mechanism to pump-prime the G-Cash system.

* Second, when Globe is ready to give G-Cash salaries, that will be the indicator that G-Cash is already mainstream.

The idea becomes reality

I’m pleased to find out that Globe has taken on the challenge and has began disbursing a portion of their employee’s paycheque via G-Cash.

An idea I wrote in November 2004 becomes reality 1 year and 4 months later!

One of these days, I’ll take the time to go back to my almost two years of m-commerce articles and identify which of my ideas have taken shape and become reality.

  • got a message direct into my inbox:

Globe has been disbursing a portion of their employees’ paychecks via G-Cash since July 2005.

Thanks for the info. Good to know.

How much G-Cash is infused into the G-Cash system through employee paychecks? What percentage of the paycheck? 😉

  • Edwin, G-Cash accredited rural banks have been disbursing as much as 100% of their employee salaries via G-Cash since mid-2006. Now local merchants have been able to cash in on this new market by offering Text-A-Payment (powered by G-Cash) for their customers (including rural bank staff). • Hey John,

Yup, I gathered the same from a Globe employee.

Also had a chat with a Smart customer service representative. She says she receives a portion of her paycheque via Smart Money. That was January 2007 and her Smart Money account was very new (she hadn’t used it yet).

This article has the most recent activity in this category that I’ve seen, so I’m going to post a question here.

This is my first time to find this site, so correct me if I’m going about this wrong.

Question: How do I contact Globe??
I live in the US, and I’ve created a consumer electronics device that I want to offer to them for future use in their MCommerce ventures.

Thanks for any and all feedback. . .

  • Hi D_Fore,

First, you can go the “customer service” way and look-up their corporate website and find their contact infor there.

But I’ll go one step further and forward your message to some of my colleagues at Globe.
They are bcc’d in this email and I leave it up to them to contact you.

If you have follow-up info you’d like to share, go ahead and post at
