Excerpt From a press release for Panibagong Paraan which I wrote about last week (Ideas on Parade):
P52 million Await Winners of Multipartner Project Grant Competition
MANILA, MAY 22, 2006 – A total of P52 million in grants coming from the
Philippines’ nine local and international development partners, including the
World Bank, will be awarded to more than 50 winning proposals to the project
grant competition of Panibagong Paraan 2006, a unique competition that seeks
new ideas and ways that promote development with equity.Eighty seven finalists will present their project proposals to a panel of
jurors and the public on May 26 and 27 at Megatrade Hall, SM Megamall,
Mandaluyong City. The finalists compete for at most P1-million start-up project
grant that will cover one year of implementation. The winners will be announced
and awarded project grants on May 27.“Panibagong Paraan 2006 is an opportunity for us to be inspired, listen, speak
and be part of the solution to poverty and inequality,” says Mr. Joachim von
Amsberg, World Bank Country Director for the Philippines. “It seeks to
recognize some of the many inspiring efforts of communities and individuals,
whose projects and ideas demonstrate how people can contribute to development.”
Mr. von Amsberg says this year’s Panibagong Paraan seeks to find the best
ideas to address inequality, which has been holding back the Philippines from
reaching its full development.Dr. Esperanza Cabral, Secretary of the Department of Social Welfare and
Development (DSWD), says that the overall message of Panibagong Paraan 2006 is
anchored on possibility and hope. “It is possible to overcome poverty, if all
of us who work hard to fight it will be given a chance,” she adds. “Although
eliminating poverty is on top of the country’s reform agenda, the nationwide
response needs a major push, not only from the government but also from various
stakeholders.” She notes that Panibagong Paraan 2006 has opened promising new
doors of opportunity to many individuals and groups, which have responded to
the challenge of providing access to basic services and reducing poverty.
