BPI Express Mobile App on Smartphones [Test Drive]

by Ka Edong on June 26, 2012

I was at BPI today, doing some bank errands. When I saw this brochure for BPI Express Mobile for Smartphones:

I decided to try out the service straight away while I was in the bank anyway. It says there are BPI Express Mobile App for the iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Java-enabled phones.

I followed instructions. And this how my transaction went:

  1. Visit www.bpiexpressonline.com and login to your BPI Express Online account. The bank I was at had an internet connected terminal, so I did that at the bank.
  2. Upon login, go to Other Services > Express Mobile Registration > Mobile Banking . I filled in the required fields and clicked submit. Upon submission, an SMS message is sent to the mobile number that was previously entered.

  3. On my Android phone, I clicked the link on the SMS message to visit a mobile site. The mobile site instructed me to take note of the Activation code that was going to be used with the App. The mobile site also contained a link to the Google Play store.
  4. At the Google Play store, I downloaded and opened the App. It asked for the activation code which I got from step 3 above.

Here are some screenshots from the app taken from my android phone.

My review of BPI Express Online on Android:

It works for me. It works waaaay better than the SMS and the mobile web version from many years back.

It provides the basic features expected from a mobile banking app. Balance inquiry, finance transactions, funds transfer, bills payment etc. Of course all these features are available if and only if you’ve enrolled these on your account.

The navigation is basic as well. The app just has links to different pages. Nothing fancy.

What I was wondering about was how to log-off from the app. There wasn’t any log-off link. It turns out, when you’re on the main page and you click the back button of your phone, a pop-up window asks if you want to log-off.

It does the job. It isn’t anything fancy, it does the job.

And by the way, I didn’t know there’s now a function where you can transfer funds to any BPI account (no need to enroll the account). That’s interesting, didn’t realize the banks have become less stringent on bank transfers. Just need to activate the feature via www.bpiexpressonline.com (it takes some processing.  I haven’t received acknowledgement that the feature is activated).

Now that’s a back-up plan for me in times when I need to do some bank transactions and don’t have laptop internet access. Good for me.

I have the same problem with the activation. I want tobpay mybpurchase online. I could’ve wired the account but now I think I’ll just go to the bank and ask them why this is and deposit it there as well..

Hi Leo, What problem did you encounter with activation?

Just to share: I attempted to use BPI App on both android and iPhone. I think the security of the app disallows use of two different phones — each time I switch to another phone, it doesn’t work unless i re-activate.

Once you get the hang of it, it’s totally convenient to use.
