Puzzle: Techie Lolo asks for email-to-usb app

May 24th, 2006 | by ka edong |

Sent this to fellow-PTBloggers last night:

Techie Lolo is asking for my help:

Techie Lolo travels a lot. He wants to save outbound emails to his flashdisk (from his laptop)
then send and receive e-mail from flashdisk at an Internet shop when leaves his hotel and goes around town.
He prefers this over having to lug around his laptop searching for a WiFi hotspot.

PTBloggers, Any ideas on how this can be done?
I couldn’t find anything similar on the net.
But I’m sure somewhere out there, somebody has thought of this already.

Here’s what I got, all within 1.5 hours of my e-mail:

Question: does he have a webmail account or a POP3 account? Any which
way, he can use:

a. Portable Firefox
(http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/browsers/portable_firefox)

b. Portable Thunderbird
(http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/email/portable_thunderbird)

He can use Thunderbird on his notebook; save the emails on the
flashdisk, where Portable Thunderbird is installed; plug in the disk
in a computer in a net cafe; and surf and check emails using that.

HTH.

I tried it out immediately. Worked like a charm.
Portable Thunderbird installer is about 5Mb. When installed, I think it takes up around 15Mb of the flashdisk space.
The user will need to configure your POP mail settings.
Thunderbird could also import an addressbook from Outlook Express — very important for Techie Lolo to have his contacts in that flashdisk.

Downside: Techie Lolo wanted to …. errrr …. “sync” emails between Outlook and the flashdisk. It won’t happen through Portable Thunderbird.

What will happen is:
a.) Techie Lolo can write offline outgoing messages on Portable Thunderbird on flashdisk.
b.) Send and receive e-mails via Portable Thunderbird on flashdisk.
c.) Read received e-mails offline via portable Thunderbird on flashdisk.
d.) All Outlook Emails will still be intact and downloaded if and when he gets an Internet connection using his laptop.

Good enough. Now let’s see how fast Techie Lolo learns Thunderbird ….

Yup, that’s how I configured portable Thunderbird, to leave messges in server. But thru POP.

The laptop Outlook downloads and deletes messages from the server.

      jepoy!

my mom sent me and my brother to typing classes when we were elementary.

20 years later, she learned how to type using the computer.
