Ah, we looooooveeee VoIP!
My brother is in London. I caught him online via Gmail and Google Chat. We quickly shifted to Skype for a voice call.
Nakakatuwa. We both had good internet connections (he at his hotel lobby and I via Smart WiFi). And the Skype pc-to-pc call was superb.
There were some (negligible) delays especially when we were talking simultaneously. There’s some ambient noise (background noise) which could get distracting when the noise goes on and off.
But it’s superb. What’s superb about it is it’s price: Free. That’s for a PC-to-PC call via Skype.
But I have plans of getting Skype Out.
Skype Out is a service that let’s me call telephones/cellphones from my PC. This could be a useful tool for me because my residence does not have a landline, just a broadband Internet connection.
Skype Out is a paid service. I made some computations before which put me at around P70 per hour when calling US numbers. That’s soooo cheap compared to the best rates that our Philippine telcos are offering.
I also took a look at the Yahoo! voice service and I see Yahoo! voice call rates (1 cent per minute to US, Canada, London) are cheaper than Skype’s ($0.023 per minute) call rates.
Ah, there’s so much to write. I think this will be a week of articles about Skype and Yahoo! voice.
- Skype rates vs. Yahoo! voice rates
- Skype-erriffic calls (SkypeOut to US; telecon US-Pinas-France; my Skype-mate in Singapore)
- Yahoo! voice – when will be my first?

I’ve had a skypeout account for about a year now. I use Skypeout when I am overseas to call the US mainland and likewise when in Manila use it at times to call my folks to tell them to go online. Then they get to see their grandson (my son) c/o Yahoo messenger while we do voice chat PC to PC via skype (free!).
One time my folk’s PC was down and I was able to troubleshoot it by calling their landline using skypeout. A 48 minute call which cost much much less than the $0.10/minute that one telco’s dsl service offers.
Why use the $.10 per minute rate of P*** dsl when skype is $0.02/minute?
cheers
